Matera – European Capital of Culture 2019
The town of Matera has been named European Capital of Culture in 2019. Located in the Province of Basilicata in southern Italy, this town is the site of one of the longest continually inhabited human settlements in the world. The first sight of the many “Sassi” or cave dwellings is spellbinding for any visitor. Initial settlers colonised natural caves in the soft tufa limestone as long as 7000 years ago and later inhabitants cut their own dwellings into the rock face, creating an underground city over the millennia, complete with cave churches and shops, which transport astonished visitors back to biblical times.
